An ENT team, led by Dr Latif Kadhim, had a very successful mission to Madagascar recently with 179 clinical consultations (66 children) and performing 18 surgical operations (13 children), with follow up twice daily ward rounds. Nine people were fitted with donated hearing aids by Dr Dayse Tavora-Vieira, Audiologist, including the very first hearing aid fitted in the Tulear region. Dr Dennis Millard, Anaesthetist, and Marika Brandtberg, Theatre Nurse, supported Latif and Dayse over the 12 days, and thanks to Karin van der Merwe for pre-trip logistics support.
The team provided mentoring and training for surgeons, audiology students and anaesthetic technicians, including a half day seminar in Antananarivo.
ADFA and the ENT team acknowledges the generous support from SJOG Bunbury, Medtronic, Stryker, SJOG Subiaco, Fiona Stanley Hospital, Royal Perth Hospital, Storz, Carl Zeiss and Olympus in providing donated medical supplies and equipment which ensured the success of this mission. Our programs in Madagascar are supported by Australian Government funding through the Australian NGO Cooperation Program.
