Comoros, the 14th poorest country in the world, consists of three islands – Grand Comore, Anjouan and Mohéli – and has a population of approx. 850,000 people.
In August 2013, Australian Doctors for Africa expanded its programs to include Comoros, its fourth country, with a scoping study in conjunction with its first medical team visit. Since then, a medical team has visited every year.
ADFA’s work is based at the Caritas Hospital and the El Marouf Hospital, located in the capital of Moroni, Grand Comore.
There have been major administrative changes in Comoros, with the installation of a new Ministry of Health in early 2017. ADFA signed a new Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry in September 2017. This coincided with the appointment of a new ADFA representative on the ground in Moroni who provides an avenue to the health administration and assists with logistics.
The orthopaedic team missions focus on the three main health issues suffered by children on Comoros – clubfoot, rickets and obstetric palsy. Other common conditions include neglected trauma, osteomyelitis and osteoarthritis.
During the 2018 medical mission at the Caritas Hospital, the team performed 247 patient consultations, 24 surgeries, and provided training to 12 medical professionals. With the excellent services of an efficient and familiar translator, more patients were seen than in previous years.
