A second team of Ballarat-based medical volunteers travelled to Madagascar to provide much needed orthopaedic and urology services in Toliara, on the west coast.

Long time ADFA volunteers, Dr Lydia Johns Putra (Urologist) and Dr Shaun English (Orthopaedic Surgeon), were joined by Dr Hock Tan (Anaesthetist) and Kylie Cross (Theatre Nurse).  Thanks to the team for volunteering and helping people in need.

The team completed 74 consultations, 32 surgical procedures, including procedures for 12 children, and twice daily ward rounds.  Mentoring and training were provided to a number of staff, including the anaesthetic technician.

ADFA acknowledges support during 2023 for our Madagascar programs from Base Toliara, BlackEarth Minerals, St John of God Subiaco Hospital, and the Australian High Commission, Mauritius.  Huge thanks to our Madagascar staff for supporting the teams and making the visits run smoothly.
