The volunteer Gastroenterology team were back in action in Madagascar providing training, clinical services and supporting public Endoscopy Units in Antananarivo, Toliara and Antsirabe.
Huge thanks to Dr Digby Cullen (Team Lead, Gastroenterologist), and nurses Jacki Crock and Leah Willey, for providing this vital training and medical assistance.
The team spent a very busy two weeks visiting five endoscopy units with great outcomes:
- Completing 144 clinical consults, 60 surgical procedures and daily post operative ward rounds.
- Training for 87 medical personnel, including hands on training and 5 formal training sessions.
- Endoscopic equipment provided to three units.
- Scoping study for proposed renovation of 2 operating theatres at CHU Antanambao (Toliara public hospital).
This assignment was supported by equipment and consumable donations from Boston Scientific, Cook Medical and DS Biomedical; a grant from St John of God Subiaco Hospital; and extra baggage support from Air Mauritius.
